This is not a historical fact about grunge, but rather a “Great Rock ‘n’ Roll album! This is a Nirvana masterpiece by Seattle trio Kurt, Chris, and Dave, whose video was a heavy draw on MTV. The thrill of the moment when the video for M1, which became a heavy rotation on MTV and triggered the band’s big breakthrough, transitions from an impossibly stagnant feeling to a powerful shout has not faded away, and the fatigue of the final song, M12, which sticks to the daily routine, has not faded away. The final track, M12, has a universal strength of expression in its creepy quietness that resembles a sense of fatigue that has stuck with us. Of course, the catchy hard numbers are also full of miraculous beauty brought about by the fortunate encounter between the band and producer Butch Vick.
