Synopsis
When Momoko Sakura, a.k.a. Maruko, learns a song called “Menkoi foal” at school, she decides to use it as the theme for her arts and crafts class, but she doesn’t know how to draw it. One day, near her grandmother’s house in Shizuoka, she meets a portrait artist who tells her that “Menkoi colt” is actually a sad song about a horse and a boy who have to be separated due to war, down to the third verse. Maruko paints the boy’s feelings and his heart that he will always remember her. When she visits her sister to let her know that her painting has won a prize, the boyfriend who taught her the lyrics proposes that she come with him as he is going back to the country to work on his ranch. Maruko refuses to go because she wants to paint, but the older sister tells her that she can paint anywhere. On the day of the wedding, she quietly sneaks out of school and shouts that she will never forget him. Some time later, a book with her sister’s drawings in it arrives. It is the same book that Maruko had just acquired in exchange for cleaning out the chicken coop.
