Manen first year (1860). The magistrate’s office sentences Hatamoto Genba Aoyama, who has committed adultery, to seppuku. But this man has one answer. “I don’t like it because it hurts.” Genba was exiled to the Ezo Matsumae clan, and walked north along the Oshu Kaido with Otojiro Ishikawa, an apprentice of the consignor. Genba has a bad mouth and bad attitude, but he has the spirit of never abandoning the people he encounters along the way. Is this man really a sinner?
