Gon Freaks has lived surrounded by the wilderness of Whale Island for as long as he can remember, and has been told that his father died in an accident shortly after Gon was born. When Gon was eight years old, he was attacked by a giant beast in the forest, but was rescued by a passing hunter named Kite. He knew Gon’s father, Gin Freaks. Kite tells Gon that he is Gin’s apprentice and that he took care of him in the past, that Gin is the best hunter he knows, and that he is still alive. Gon develops a strong admiration for hunters and dreams that he too will become a hunter and meet his father. As Gon grows up and nears the age of 12, he convinces his foster mother, Mito, to leave his birthplace to take the extremely difficult hunter exam.
