This notebook is a collaboration between the Hobonichi Techo and the
Tokyo National Museum in Ueno, Tokyo , which will celebrate its 150th anniversary in 2022 . The Tokyo National Museum, also known by its nickname “Tohaku,” is a museum that collects, preserves, manages, exhibits, conducts research, and conducts education and dissemination projects for cultural properties from Japan and other parts of Asia . From among the approximately 120,000 items in our collection, we have selected a single picture drawn by Zeshin Shibata and made it into a notebook cover. Shibata Zeshin (1807-1891) was a lacquer maker and painter who was born in Edo Ryogoku and was active from the end of the Edo period to the middle of the Meiji period. He created many lacquer art techniques himself, and left behind excellent works of lacquerware and lacquer paintings, including maki-e . In addition, Zeshin, who studied painting from a young age in order to draw rough sketches for maki-e, demonstrated his talent in painting, such as sketches, portraits, and designs . One of them is the Tairyu Kyogafu , which consists of 72 paintings depicting plants, animals, people, and landscapes. “Taiyanagi” is one of the names of Zeshin, and it is derived from the fact that a willow could be seen on the opposite bank of the Kanda River where Zeshin lived at the time. From this “Taiyanagi Gafu”.
